For fans of Killing Eve and My Sister, the Serial Killer, a sharp and brilliant romp of a novel about a reformed sociopath trying to build a successful family life and find her perfect home in North London—whatever the cost

Lalla Rook is happily in possession of an adoring husband, two beautiful children and a beautiful house. (Tick, tick, tick). She’s even stopped killing people (double tick). Or had, until she found an uninvited man snooping through her living room. Now she has a dead body to dispose of amidst the stress of hosting a four-year-old’s birthday party. But the show must go on—you can’t cancel key social events without difficult questions being asked, not even for an unidentified corpse in your front room.

Lalla can’t pretend she hasn’t missed the adrenaline rush that comes with murder. As a wife and mother, she’s necessarily an expert multi-tasker. So, burying a body, “framing” a friend and getting her daughter into a top school can be managed alongside the usual domestic minutiae. It’s just that her husband, Stephen, seems distracted, her daughter’s drowning of the class hamster is affecting her prospects and then there is the unexpected reappearance of an old flame. And, inconveniently, the police have chosen the worst possible time to finally take an interest in her.

A Sociopath’s Guide to A Successful Marriage is a darkly comic crime mystery about a reformed sociopath trying to make it as a North London mother, who will do whatever it takes to save her marriage, get her daughter into prep school, secure her dream house in Hampstead and remove all obstacles in her path. Human or otherwise.

REVIEW

How to Stay Married and Get Away With Murder: A Review of A Sociopath’s Guide to a Successful Marriage

M.K. Oliver’s A Sociopath’s Guide to a Successful Marriage is a sharp, wickedly funny crime novel that flips domestic bliss on its head. Meet Lalla Rook, a former sociopath who’s traded her old habits for marriage and motherhood in North London, at least, that’s what she tells herself. When she finds a dead body in her living room (not her husband, in case you’re worried), Lalla doesn’t panic or call the police. She rolls up her sleeves, determined to handle the problem her own way, kicking off a story that’s equal parts satire and suspense.

The book juggles thriller, comedy, and domestic drama without dropping a single ball. Lalla is as magnetic as she is dangerous; her attempts to maintain the act of the perfect wife and mother are complicated by her old instincts and a knack for trouble. She’s an unreliable narrator you can’t help but root for, even as her sociopathic edge threatens to unravel everything she’s built. The supporting characters, family, friends, and assorted enemies, are drawn with a satirical flair that pokes fun at the absurdities of suburban life.

Oliver’s writing is crisp and cutting, full of biting wit and dark humour. The story moves fast, with dialogue that crackles and an intimacy that pulls you deep into Lalla’s off-kilter perspective. A Sociopath’s Guide to a Successful Marriage is a great read; the book’s voice and nerve are superb; it’s twisty, compulsive, and genuinely funny.

If you like your thrillers clever and your narrators a bit unhinged, you’ll burn through this one in a weekend. Just don’t expect to feel comfortable. Oliver’s debut is as sharp as it is unpredictable. Fans of My Sister, the Serial Killer or anything with a “Killing Eve” vibe will find a lot to love.
