In this riveting domestic thriller, a standalone sequel to Mothers’ Instinct, a recent divorcée and her two children befriend their new neighbors, only to realize there's something dangerously unsettling about the couple next door.
After separating from her work-obsessed husband, Nora Depardieu is ready for a fresh start. With her vivacious teenage daughter and eight-year-old son in tow, she moves into half of a cozy two-family house in a tranquil suburb and goes to work as a teacher’s aide.
Being a working single mother is a challenge, and Nora is grateful when her new next-door neighbor, Tiphaine Geniot, offers to watch the kids. The arrangement thrills Nora’s daughter, who has begun a mutual flirtation with Tiphaine’s fifteen-year-old son, Milo.
But Nora doesn’t know that the Geniots are a disturbed couple whose lives were destroyed by a devastating loss. She also doesn’t know a tragic secret about Milo that is also connected to her new house.
As the truth of the past come to light, what Nora doesn’t know could kill her. . . .

REVIEW
Barbara Abel’s After the End is a domestic thriller that refuses to let you breathe easy. Nora Depardieu, freshly divorced and hoping for a clean slate, moves her kids to a quiet neighbourhood, only to find that starting over is a lot messier than she bargained for. What starts as neighbourly small talk quickly morphs into something far more sinister, as a single tragic accident shatters every illusion of safety.
Abel’s characters feel painfully honest, especially Nora, whose vulnerability is matched only by her grit. The story digs into how grief and trauma can warp even the closest bonds, exploring motherhood, trust, and the fragile hope of putting a life back together. You never feel manipulated; instead, Abel lets tension simmer until it’s almost unbearable, offering a suspense that’s rooted in real emotion rather than cheap twists.
I found myself struck by the book’s honesty, a slow burn that doesn’t rush, but pays off in gut-punches and hard truths. Some might wish for more action, but this isn’t a story about car chases or gunfights. It’s about the quiet unravelling of a family, and how the ordinary can become terrifying when secrets come to light.
Suppose you want a thriller with depth, where the real twists are psychological and the stakes are heartbreakingly personal after the End delivers. Abel’s take on grief is haunting, her suspense unrelenting, and her characters impossible to forget.
