Natalie Barelli is back with another deliciously claustrophobic domestic thriller, and The Housewife is exactly the kind of popcorn read you inhale in one afternoon. Jodie Davies always dreamed of being a housewife, and after a whirlwind romance she gets it all. A renowned psychologist husband, Dr. Roy Davies, and a flawless Beverly Hills mansion. It’s everything she ever wanted. Until she starts to notice the cracks.
What I love about Barelli is how quickly she makes that perfect life feel like a prison. Roy is charming, controlled, and controlling in that slow, insidious way that gives you chills. Jodie is not just a naive new bride either; she comes from a rough upbringing and has her own secrets to protect, which makes her a much more interesting narrator than your typical trapped wife. Then there’s the mystery of Roy’s first wife and the strange new maid who appears in the house, and suddenly Jodie’s dream is tilting into a nightmare where revealing the truth could be fatal.
It’s twisty, bingeable, and wickedly fun. Barelli paints that world of wealth and entitlement so vividly that you can feel the gilded cage closing in. The pacing is fast, the chapters are short, and while a couple of twists are a bit over-the-top, that’s part of the charm. Jodie definitely pushes through, and I was rooting for her the whole way.
If you loved The Housekeeper, this is Barelli in her sweet spot: marriage secrets, power games, and a housewife who is a lot smarter than her husband thinks she is.
